In the United States, obesity has become a condition of epidemic proportions. The problem has been publicized so much so that the food industry is already working closely with health professionals to steer their products towards a more healthy orientation. Health professionals at first encouraged people to consume fewer eggs because of the cholesterol found in eggs. After that particular piece of information, doctors began to discover that when fat is consumed, incidents of cholesterol problems became higher. This resulted in an entire generation growing up with and consuming fat-free foods. The consensus was that fat clogged the arteries and generally caused ill-health. It was also blamed for the accumulation of fat in the body. It is primarily fat in foods that give flavour to a dish. With the loss of this component, carbohydrates were used to make up for the loss in taste of food. When the fat is removed, the taste must be artificially injected into the food. The end result is a food that is higher in carbohydrate content, but lower in fat. Subsequently, produce labelled fat-free are indeed fat-free but contain higher amounts of carbohydrates. To the consternation of health professionals, obesity did not disappear but, instead, seemed to be spreading itself out (pardon the pun) more on the population. What they did not realize is that fat is a necessary component to help our metabolism properly process all the vitamins and other nutrients our body consumes. Fortunately, it isn't too late to correct this mistake. According to the guides published by the USDA, calorie needs vary from one age group to another as well as one gender to another. To get an idea of what your individual daily calorie intake need is for maintenance, addition or subtraction of weight, setup a journal for recording your daily caloric intake for about a month. Make a note of your weight each day. If you don’t gain any weight during the course of that month, you’re eating your recommended maintenance calorie level in order to maintain your weight. Now, take that calorie information, use the food pyramid and use a combination of foods that will help you achieve this recommended daily intake. This way, the food you eat is still enough to satisfy hunger and please the palette. You now have an individualized healthy eating plan. This is the safe sure way to reach weight loss goals. |
